Glad to be a part of #NEPHROCON2024. It was no ordinary meeting. We had a dedicated workshop on Deceased Kidney Donation with sessions by Dr. Deepak Gupta, Professor Neurogery, AIIMS New Delhi and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, MOHAN foundation.
I had this opportunity to moderate the panel discussion that followed.
No wonder, the sessions were soul-stirring. A lot of introspection is needed to ensure the success of deceased donation programme. The key ingredients being empathy, a sense of moral responsibility, a belief in its potential to save countless lives, collaboration with multiple specialities within the hospital, management and public awareness.
For long, the radioiodine contrast agents have been considered to be nephrotoxic. While it appears to be true for the older agents, the epidemiological studies describing Contrast-associated AKI had their own drawbacks. Anyhow, this propelled the development of low-osmolar and iso-osmolar contrast agents- which are much safer.
But the unfounded fear has lead many to deny life-saving investigations and procedures to patients with chronic kidney disease. In my talk at the recently held #NEPHROCON2024, I briefly presented the evidence that by denying a contrast related procedure, we may risk harming our patients more. It may be prudent if we assess the real need to use a contrast agent, weigh the potential risks and benefit and take decision in the best interest of our patients.
