Kidney disease is an umbrella term which includes a number of different ailments. So, the “one-size-fits-all” isn’t the principle at play. Let’s address a few questions here.
- Water water everywhere. How much should I drink?
The amount of total fluids (water, milk, tea, coffee, beverages etc) recommended depends on a number of factors-the type of kidney disease, its extent, co-existing heart or liver problems, daily urine output, hydration status etc. It may be prudent to have a rough estimate of one’s urine output to discuss about the recommended fluid intake. Discuss with your doctor about what quantity is optimal for you. Connect with Dr. lovy gaur – The Best Nephrologist in Delhi NCR for More information.
2.) Salt – should I bother?
Oh yes, you should. Salt and water go hand in hand. In presence of kidney (and heart or liver) diseases, salt often worsens the fluid retention in the body leading to swelling of face/feet, water in abdomen (ascites) and in lungs (pulmonary edemal. Excess salt intake also prevents the medications (like diuretics) to act to their full capacity. Additionally, it makes the control of blood pressure difficult. So restriction of salt is often advised.
Having said that, don’t go for “zero-salt-diet”. Choose low-salt-diet.
3.) Proteins – to take or to Eliminate ?
Proteins are building blocks of the body. Recommended protein intake differs according to the type of kidney disease and the baseline nutrition status of the patient. Malnutrition could be dangerous by posing risks of serious infections. Speak to your doctor about what is optimum for you.

4.) Fruit Juice – Can I ?
Fruit juices contain notoriously high levels of sugars and often potassium and are often low in fiber. For patients with advanced kidney disease and those who have high serum potassium levels, it is prudent to avoid juice. Consumption of fruit juice may make fluid restriction impractical and pose risk of high blood sugars in those with Diabetes.
